Donte ‘Holiday’ Ming
Founder of The Umbrella Movement
Donte ‘Holiday’ Ming is a proud father, passionate community activist, and the visionary founder of The Umbrella Movement. A native of Detroit’s east side, Ming’s journey is one of resilience, leadership, and a deep commitment to uplifting his community.
From a young age, Ming faced adversity head-on. After losing his mother to gun violence, he found solace and purpose in sports, becoming the starting quarterback and point guard for East Catholic High School's football and basketball teams. Through sports, he discovered the power of teamwork, discipline, and leadership—qualities that would shape his path forward.
Ming was fortunate to be surrounded by positive role models and mentors like Raphael Robinson, Tyrone Todd, Carol Dorsey, Laceto Garrett, and Nicholas Sulaka. These high-character individuals played a pivotal role in his growth, each imparting unique lessons that would lay the foundation for his future endeavors. Robinson taught him the value of resources and the power of networking, Todd instilled in him the importance of structure and strategic planning, and Sulaka opened his eyes to the world of business and entrepreneurship.
In 2015, inspired by the lessons and principles imparted by his mentors, Ming founded The Umbrella Movement. His vision was clear: to revitalize the community, foster entrepreneurship, and unify Detroit's youth. The organization embodies everything Ming has learned and stands for—a relentless commitment to creating opportunities and building a stronger, more united Detroit.
Ming’s natural leadership abilities and his deep understanding of the challenges faced by inner-city youth have equipped him to be more than just an activist; he is a crusader for a better Detroit, now and in the future. Whether leading on the field as a sports captain or driving change in his community, Ming moves with intention, purpose, and a genuine passion for service. His track record speaks for itself—a selfless leader who works tirelessly, without ego or hidden agendas, to uplift those around him.
Ming’s dedication to his community and his impactful work with The Umbrella Movement have not gone unnoticed; his efforts have been featured on Fox 2 Detroit and in the Detroit News, further cementing his role as a champion for positive change in his hometown.
